Phantom Limb

In May 2002 Throwstar helped found Birmingham hip-hop collective, Phantom Limb. The aim was to establish a much-needed networking arena for local hip-hop artists, whether rookies or veterans.

Once the network was up and running the 18 artists in the collective did more than simply socialize. Within this atmosphere of encouragement, learning and healthy competition, they've supported each other live and in
the studio.

They set guidelines for their joint recordings:
- Every song must have a distinct theme, topic or narrative. (The hip-hop genre is already overflowing with vague battle raps or aimless posse songs)
- Be prepared to practice constructive criticism and also to have your material scrutinized by others
- Avoid swearing, racist language or lyrics which degrade women
- Avoid ‘thuggish’ ultra-violent lyrics
