After a decade of musical jestering Zang Productions is finally to be shut down. We leave you with these parting gifts:
Advent Day 25

Merry Christmas all. Mike found an old instrument from the 70's called a Bon Tempé or something, and Rob's cat walked over it and this strange composition was composed.

Perhaps all that Zang has ever really said in the last strange decade is said here...
Advent Day 9

It was 2005 and it was one of UotK's best. Typically playful, and yet totally sincere, if you can believe it.

The sleigh bells... the beat drop at 2 mins... the rock falsetto (rob I think)... that guitar flourish (!) at 3mins... the beat-boxing at 3:10... Selina Blakeney saving the song at 3:20...

No one else was doing this kind of thing back in 2005.
Advent Day 8

The year is 2010, it is already almost halfway through Dec and there isn't even a Christmas song planned. This track actually came together at 2am in the morning of the 12th and everything except for Selina's backing vocals was laid down whilst sitting on the sofa into the laptop microphone!
Advent Day 7

Day seven of the Zang Christmas calender is In The Bleak Mindwinter, recorded by the Army of the Broken Hearted, live in the alleyway next to Mike the accordian guy's house. It was just last year... a candle-lit night with mince pies and cold fingers.

This EP might be my favourite ABH recording so far, for it's live and on-location spirit. We managed to record three good songs with various passers-by joining in, until someone who sang like a goat showed up and sank the rest of the project.

Advent Day 5

Continuing the tradition of a secret Christmas track at the end of every University of the King record, we made this for that foetal hip-hop philosophy long player Zang Hibidy. Not a very Christmassy album in feel - true - but the nativity story is one rich field of foetal philosophy.

One review of that album stated "the vocals annoy throughout." Some people just didn't get it. Here it is...
ZANG ADVENT DAY 3

Here is the third Christmas song in Zang's advent calenderof 2012.

It's the secret track on University of the King's ground breaking 2002 long player Look Out for Germs. Rob was super keen to do this one in a real Nat King Cole voice, and we all ended up a little bit disappointed at missing the mark so badly. I guess either you're Nat King Cole, or you're not Nat King Cole, and we weren't Nat King Cole. Still, it's alright.

So here it is: Merry Chritmas to You...

Advent Day 2

This track sort of slipped under the radar back in 2010. Mainly because it only got concieved, written and recorded on the 20th December.

Selina Blakeney - on her way back from the laundrette - slipped over on the festive ice and was inspired to write this track.

So, for day 2 of the Zang Advent Calendar we have A Christmas Tale by Selina Blakeney

ZANG'S CHRISTMAS ADVENT CALENDER BEGINS...

This will be the last ever Zang Christmas, and so the Zang family will be counting down to the day of the Saviour's birth (or the day we celebrate it over here anyway), with 25 of Zang's favourite Christmas songs from the last decade.

Today, the 1st of December, we bring you Sleigh Ride - a record from University of King, way back in 2004. I, for one had had this song in my mind for some time. It's got a great family feeling to it. Some beautiful extra vocals on there from Selina Blakeney (who was rescuing a lot of UotK work from nightmarish atonality at that time), and listen out for the solo at 2:20... It's quite something.
ZANG 2001 - 2012

Shocking news: after a decade of beautiful music, juvenile trickery, impassioned social criticism, and playful philosophical enquiry, the Zang Productions label will, at the end of 2012 cease to be.

The intensity of the Zang spirit has been a force of nature in its own time and way, but it has been agreed by the founders that that the story needs to end in the fashion of a good book, and not continue indefinitely like bad Australian television.

The last three months of 2012 will be fairly packed with releases, free downloads, and some nostalgic reminiscence. So stay by the bedside of a dying label if you want to hear some good stories…
In describing his reworking of Selina Blakeney's beautiful choral version of The Killers' "On Top", Ray had this to say:
Bang! Bang!

Bang! Bang!, an art party-cum-club-night concieved and curated by artist Trevor Pitt happened last Saturday at Vivid Art Gallery and we were very excited to be a part of it. We both contributed work as solo artists along with fellow artists Joey Vivo and Roseanna Velin.

"Pop Is Dead" by Vincent Gould was a makeshift funeral for pop music, complete with candles, a book of condolence, an urn and an order of service. Viewers were encouraged to light a candle and wear a black poppy to commemorate the death of pop.

"99 Red Balloons" by John Napier

I wanted to bring musical legends down a peg or two and remind us all that they are not divine beings whose work is unnatainable for us mere mortals. With this in mind I wrote some of pop history's most iconic and respected bands on loads of balloons, filled them with helium and slipped a tiny strip of paper inside each one with a specific criticism of that band or artist. At 11:30 I then went around popping each balloon to reveal the secret inside...

In case you missed this, The Rebel Army will be performing at Superfuzz Bigmuff tomorrow (Thurs 3rd Nov) at Bulls Head, Moseley. £3 on the door.

What they wrote about me:

"The poetic half of WALER goes it alone and does something alarmingly fresh and original, a sort of militant, steel-drum tinged dub-ragga beat, guaranteed to get your bum wiggling whilst managing to keep you cranium stimulated the whole time. Get there nice and early for this very different bigmuff experience!"

Nice.

Benjamin Blower - Babylon is Dead Vol #2

The new EP by Benjamin Blower is now available for free download.

Some three years since Babylon is Dead Volume 1, we finally have the next chapter. There are also another five in the pipeline, we're told.

Oddly, this EP had been completed and shelved some time ago. The current economic apocalypse and the questions raised by the global occupy movement perhaps make it more relevant now than it would've been then anyway.

As with volume 1, it comes hand in hand with some of BB's written thought.

Consider... enjoy... and please pass it on.

NEW FICTION FIGHT ALBUM OUT ON SUNDAY!

Greetings Zang fans and fam,

Fiction Fight's new wonderful album 'I Am A Thief' is about to be released. Since the songs are psalms it seems appropriate to release them on a Sunday.

It's a Pay What You Wish release which you will be able to download from their homesite: www.fictionfight.co.uk

These ten new psalms might just blow your socks off. They'll at least remove your shoes. They helped me interact with the Infinite in a new way. I'm delighted to promote this beautiful piece of sonic art.

Fiction Fighters, thank you for making this delicate, warm, vulnerable album.

Your fan,
Join the Army of the Broken Hearted for January Action

The Army of the Broken Hearted will be hitting Union Street at noon this Saturday 29th January, right in the thick of the 2-dimentional, businessman-made, commercial deities that we all grew up to fear and desire. We, the ABH, will be contending for the sacredness of humankind against the sexual commodification of womankind for profit. Come along with your pots, pans and shakers and lets see how long we last.

Also, maybe ready to buy some flowers, if you like, because there's a nice lady selling flowers nearby, and she'd appreciate it.

2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011 2011.....

2011 is now happening and we here at Zang are squaring up for Fction Fight's first ever long player. Barrowclough and Benjamin Blower have new releases in the canon. Selina Blakeney is sitting on a mine's worth of coal she's been crushing into musical diamonds ...and there's other things too, but we're not saying about that yet.

For anybody who need forgiveness, there's a new free download from Benjamin Blower's Darkness sessions.

A Christmas Tale by Selina Blakeney

The Blakeney's just cannot stop... they indulge their penchant for yuletide melody unashamedly.

After suffering a Home Alone-esque-coccyx-bashing fall on the ice, and hanging out with the locals down at the laundrette, Selina was filled with overwhelming sense of Christmas spirit and penned this free track for all to hear...

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Merry Christmas!

Right, to get you in the festive mood, Greybeard has recorded Do You Hear What I Hear? - A classic from 1962....

I like to think this was made famous by Gremlins when it is heard as one gets blown-up in a microwave and another gets blended, but I'm sure there are other significant moments that make this a festive great!

This was recorded straight into the laptop using the laptops built in Mic, so its a bit crusty-soundin' - but I think that is part of the beauty...

You can get it now in the Free Download area...

Waler - Formulas

Today we see the release of Waler's first album on Zang.

After honing their work in a string of socially conscious dance/hip hop EPs, Waler have put together their Zang debut: an album of high-energy, idiosyncratic pop music. Vincent Gould and John Napier cut popular music to shreds and paste it back together into things crystallised - iconic upon first listening. Popular music boiled down to its basic elements. Popular culture stripped of every facade and pretence. It exists somewhere in the mind of the post modern, before it’s even been played.

Formulas: a tribute to early ‘90’s dance music, Italo-disco and 80’s new wave. Every loop, every guitar riff and every iconic chorus is loaded with irony and a grave suspicion of our inherited musical history, as well as fathomless love and nostalgia.

The album is available on iTunes and in the Zang Online Store right now.

It will be available on Spotify and most other digital download site from next Monday...

Michaelis Constant Remix: NEW FREE DOWNLOAD

We're talking about the late nineties/early naughties. Barrowclough, Joel the Custodian and Michael Stork were weirding out the whole UK hip hop scene as Michaelis Constant. They were a defining influence for University of the King, and a catalyst for the birth of Zang itself.

I, Mr. Z, found this lost remix of a track from their critically acclaimed and financially disasterous second album Gondwanaland. Go get it from the free downloads page. Who did the remix? It's a competition. Email your answers to info@zangproductions.co.uk ...winner gets used toothbrushes from all three MCs.

The Custodians - My Organs Are Yours PT1: New Free E.P.

Salutations.

Myself and Eliot are pleased to present to you the first half of our FREE double E.P. 'My Organs Are Yours'.

The first of many releases from the Zang squad this year, this hip hop e.p. has some unusual, brain-twisting beats that really steered me into some sort of sonic rainforest, throwing me and my fellow lyricists out of the vehicle armed only with pens and pads.

My lyrics were formed in the bright raw light of diary entry confessionals, so if you read the lyrics on our ROSTER page you'll be looking into my head, which I find unsettling as well as exciting. Maybe you're going through the same stuff as me.

This first E.P. features 5 tracks with help from our friends Benjamin Blower, Greybeard, The What Supreme, Sensei C, Nicholas Noble (The Gentlemen), Supervillain, Michael Stork, Log, Cro and Christmas Carter.

Thank yous to Danielle & Melanie and Leo, Evie and Ellis!

E.P. 2 will be available on the 1st June 2009. The whole double E.P. will be available to buy on Monday the 13th April 2009 complete with a bonus track...

Grab the first E.P. HERE RIGHT NOW!

Enjoy the organs

2009 is looking like a smoking year here at Zang. There's rumours of releases from the likes of University of the King and Joel the Custodian. Greybeard and Barrowclough are hard at work in the studio. Benjamin Blower and Bethan Marshall will be gigging. Selina Blakeney is finding her way onto everybody else's records. TV-Head is watching TV, and we think Ickberg may have been abducted by Aliens.

There will be free songs, videos and EPs coming out this year, so stay tuned in. Right now there's a lost song from Benjamin Blower's Pillar of Smoke sessions on the downloads page.

Our gruff Canadian friend has gone crazy and just made 3 albums for free give-aways: Dirtbike1/3, Dirtbike2/3, and very soon Dirtbike3/3. Google that and you'll soon find something. BB's track is on Dirtbike2/3.

Anyway, UOTK is officially an acronym standing for University of the King (The band that brought you such hits as Pull Back swing & I Love It Here). This is according at least to "The Great Abbreviation Hunt" website.
