So Long, Farewell, Goodbye, I Love You

After a decade of musical jestering Zang Productions is finally to be shut down. We leave you with these parting gifts:

-One last album, called So Long, Farewell, Goodby, I Love You. It's free to download, and it features University of the King, Florent, Barrowclough, Benjamin Blower, Greybeard, Vincent Gould, Fiction Fight, Ebenezer, Bethan Marshall and Selina Blakeney.

It was 2005 and it was one of UotK's best. Typically playful, and yet totally sincere, if you can believe it.

The sleigh bells... the beat drop at 2 mins... the rock falsetto (rob I think)... that guitar flourish (!) at 3mins... the beat-boxing at 3:10... Selina Blakeney saving the song at 3:20...

No one else was doing this kind of thing back in 2005.

The year is 2010, it is already almost halfway through Dec and there isn't even a Christmas song planned. This track actually came together at 2am in the morning of the 12th and everything except for Selina's backing vocals was laid down whilst sitting on the sofa into the laptop microphone!

The crapness of the mic only added to the charm.

Day seven of the Zang Christmas calender is In The Bleak Mindwinter, recorded by the Army of the Broken Hearted, live in the alleyway next to Mike the accordian guy's house. It was just last year... a candle-lit night with mince pies and cold fingers.

This EP might be my favourite ABH recording so far, for it's live and on-location spirit. We managed to record three good songs with various passers-by joining in, until someone who sang like a goat showed up and sank the rest of the project.

Continuing the tradition of a secret Christmas track at the end of every University of the King record, we made this for that foetal hip-hop philosophy long player Zang Hibidy. Not a very Christmassy album in feel - true - but the nativity story is one rich field of foetal philosophy.

One review of that album stated "the vocals annoy throughout." Some people just didn't get it. Here it is...

Here is the third Christmas song in Zang's advent calenderof 2012.

It's the secret track on University of the King's ground breaking 2002 long player Look Out for Germs. Rob was super keen to do this one in a real Nat King Cole voice, and we all ended up a little bit disappointed at missing the mark so badly. I guess either you're Nat King Cole, or you're not Nat King Cole, and we weren't Nat King Cole. Still, it's alright.

So here it is: Merry Chritmas to You...

This track sort of slipped under the radar back in 2010. Mainly because it only got concieved, written and recorded on the 20th December.

Selina Blakeney - on her way back from the laundrette - slipped over on the festive ice and was inspired to write this track.

ZANG'S CHRISTMAS ADVENT CALENDER BEGINS...

This will be the last ever Zang Christmas, and so the Zang family will be counting down to the day of the Saviour's birth (or the day we celebrate it over here anyway), with 25 of Zang's favourite Christmas songs from the last decade.

Today, the 1st of December, we bring you Sleigh Ride - a record from University of King, way back in 2004. I, for one had had this song in my mind for some time. It's got a great family feeling to it. Some beautiful extra vocals on there from Selina Blakeney (who was rescuing a lot of UotK work from nightmarish atonality at that time), and listen out for the solo at 2:20... It's quite something.

This Wednesday – thats oct 31st, Halloween – The Army of the Broken Hearted will be shooting a music video on the Number 50 bus in Birmingham… Anybody’s welcome. We’ll meet outside the Hare and Hounds on Kings Heath High Street at 7.45pm You’ll need £3.80 for a daysaver ticket.

We’ll be playing the songs Ride That Beast and Not Going to Buy it. You can shout along on the choruses (they’re not complicated…), and you can also bring a percussion instrument if you like. You can listen to the songs here and get familiarised.

Be aware, the video will be a big diss to the tabloid press’ empire of misogyny, and it’ll be affiliated with the no more page three campaign.

The intensity of the Zang spirit has been a force of nature in its own time and way, but it has been agreed by the founders that that the story needs to end in the fashion of a good book, and not continue indefinitely like bad Australian television.

The last three months of 2012 will be fairly packed with releases, free downloads, and some nostalgic reminiscence. So stay by the bedside of a dying label if you want to hear some good stories…

Bang! Bang!

Bang! Bang!, an art party-cum-club-night concieved and curated by artist Trevor Pitt happened last Saturday at Vivid Art Gallery and we were very excited to be a part of it. We both contributed work as solo artists along with fellow artists Joey Vivo and Roseanna Velin.

"Pop Is Dead" by Vincent Gould was a makeshift funeral for pop music, complete with candles, a book of condolence, an urn and an order of service. Viewers were encouraged to light a candle and wear a black poppy to commemorate the death of pop.

"99 Red Balloons" by John Napier

I wanted to bring musical legends down a peg or two and remind us all that they are not divine beings whose work is unnatainable for us mere mortals. With this in mind I wrote some of pop history's most iconic and respected bands on loads of balloons, filled them with helium and slipped a tiny strip of paper inside each one with a specific criticism of that band or artist. At 11:30 I then went around popping each balloon to reveal the secret inside...

Waler Show Art Installations at BANG BANG

The new EP by Benjamin Blower is now available for free download.

Some three years since Babylon is Dead Volume 1, we finally have the next chapter. There are also another five in the pipeline, we're told.

Oddly, this EP had been completed and shelved some time ago. The current economic apocalypse and the questions raised by the global occupy movement perhaps make it more relevant now than it would've been then anyway.

As with volume 1, it comes hand in hand with some of BB's written thought.

Waler - Formulas

Today we see the release of Waler's first album on Zang.

After honing their work in a string of socially conscious dance/hip hop EPs, Waler have put together their Zang debut: an album of high-energy, idiosyncratic pop music. Vincent Gould and John Napier cut popular music to shreds and paste it back together into things crystallised - iconic upon first listening. Popular music boiled down to its basic elements. Popular culture stripped of every facade and pretence. It exists somewhere in the mind of the post modern, before it’s even been played.

Formulas: a tribute to early ‘90’s dance music, Italo-disco and 80’s new wave. Every loop, every guitar riff and every iconic chorus is loaded with irony and a grave suspicion of our inherited musical history, as well as fathomless love and nostalgia.

I was cold, the camera and mic hands hurts a lot after being exposed for 3 minutes. Some people beeped at us, one bus stopped, and shouted something and then moved along, but it all added to the fun!

The first of many releases from the Zang squad this year, this hip hop e.p. has some unusual, brain-twisting beats that really steered me into some sort of sonic rainforest, throwing me and my fellow lyricists out of the vehicle armed only with pens and pads.

My lyrics were formed in the bright raw light of diary entry confessionals, so if you read the lyrics on our ROSTER page you'll be looking into my head, which I find unsettling as well as exciting. Maybe you're going through the same stuff as me.

This first E.P. features 5 tracks with help from our friends Benjamin Blower, Greybeard, The What Supreme, Sensei C, Nicholas Noble (The Gentlemen), Supervillain, Michael Stork, Log, Cro and Christmas Carter.

Upcoming Gigs

There are some gigs coming up at the end of January and the beginning of February.

Firstly the are 3 gigs in 3 days, - commencing Monday 30th January - at the Birmingham Uni, all before lunchtime too! These gigs will feature performances from Beloved, Joel the Custodian, Greybeard, and University of the King.

On Monday February 6th, Bethan Marshall has a performance in the Gallery at the Custard Factory to help launch a new arts exhibition called 'AREA UNRESTRICTED'

This year can expect some releases from new artists and old alike...

Bethan Marhsall is a singer/song-writer based in Birmingham. Recording for her debut release has already commenced. You can hear some samples of her material in the artist section

Beloved is currently working on new material which will hopefully come to fruition at some point this year...

Greybeard (Rob Blakeney from University of the King) is also currently working on a debut solo album.

University of the King will be gigging more extensively this year and will be pushing 'Zang Hibidy' more.

There will continue to be plenty of Free Downloads this year from various artists.

Every few weeks we will be placing previously unreleased and specially prepared tracks by Zang artists online for downloading.

Beloved to support Buck 65

Beloved, that is David Blower (that is in actual fact Benjamin Blower), is set to support Buck 65 at the Custard Factory in Birmingham on 27th April 2004.

Tracks from the forthcoming Beloved album will be debuted along with 'Graveyard Banter' from the new Ickberg album and 'Rite of Self Esteem' from last years University of the King album, 'Look Out For Germs'.
